Last Wednesday was my last day in Accounts Payable for a while because Rebeca and Jason are coming to visit this Friday, and I want to be able to get things done around the house and yard before they get here. Aaah, this is the beauty of subbing. When we both worked, there was no choice, things just got done after work or on the weekends. Now there IS a choice, and it sure does feel good.
So, Rebeca and Jason get here late Friday (Oct. 3rd) and we are really looking forward to that!!
These flowers, although they are a sunflower of some type, we call them "September Flowers", because they only bloom here in September.

Working
Fernando has been working in the lab there in Tokyo and says that he'll be working from 10am to 10pm during the week, and half days on Saturdays. Rough. He also is borrowing someone's bike to get to the school from his apartment, which takes him about 15 to 20 minutes. Who knows what that bike ride will be like when it gets colder, but he has gotten drenched in rain already.
Guillermo and I had a nice weekend, we had dinner with friends Friday evening, and after our meal went to a Chocolate Bistro, which was extremely enjoyable. We sat at an outside table, the weather was absolutely perfect, and had really good coffee and dessert. The next evening, Saturday, we had dinner with other friends at La Fogata, sitting outside on the tropical patio enjoying great weather again. And the mango margaritas were excellent!!

Off to Japan
Happy Birthday Eva!!!
So, Fernando is gone again. He left Tuesday at 7:51am for Tokyo, Japan. Total travel time, barring any delays, was 16 hours. We haven't heard from him yet, but we're sure he has a lot of catching up to do on his sleep. It's been a wonderful 3 weeks with him here and now we are looking forward to the arrival of Jason and Rebeca in a little less than 3 weeks!
After we dropped Fernando off, I actually had to go in to work!! Northside's Accounts Payable Dept. called on Monday and asked if I could work Tuesday and Thursday this week. So, that's what I'll be doing! It was weird working again, but as long as it's a few days a week, that'll be good. Guillermo and I met for lunch that day, since the lunch hour is an actual hour long. And that made the day go so much nicer.
Here's a picture of Fernando getting ready for his big trip.
And a picture of the living room while he was doing that.

Oysters, Crawfish, Swampthing........
At first we thought that maybe this dinner would have to be postponed because we didn't know if the effects of Hurricane Ike would be bearing down on us by then. But, fortunately for us, (but not fortunately for Galveston and Houston), Ike is veering further to the east and keeping it farther away from San Antonio so far.
So, it was a good day. Dinner at Pappadeaux's is always the best place to have a birthday dinner. Oysters on the half shell, fried crawfish, a Swampthing, well, what else can I say??
Here I am seated between the two greatest guys on earth. Our server was kind enough to take this picture.

Dangerous work
Guillermo and Fernando tackled a really challenging job today, cutting some branches off a Hackberry tree that had gotten too big and was shading a nice Oak tree that Guillermo planted many years ago. Guillermo has been wanting to cut those branches down for a LONG time and today it was finally done, thanks to Fernando's help.
Fernando up in the tree, sawing off a branch. Doesn't look too bad, does it?
But this is how it ACTUALLY looked, and yes it did look bad. Needless to say, it was hard for me to watch, and I was glad when he came down from up there.
Another night-blooming cereus that we went out at 1:00am to see.
Saturday, September 6th
We all got together again at our house for lunch and after taking pictures outside, we came back in, had coffee and dessert, then looked at some of the pictures that Fernando took in Africa. Then we watched Chris, Kathy, Jacob and Mike play Guesstures. They were hilarious!!
Here are some pictures of the day.

The winner
One of our avocados actually had to be cut off the tree! So, we did get one avocado that hung in there all the way. The only other one we had was pecked by birds and fell to the ground. We cut open the one that fell, cut away the bad part, and the rest of it was really good!
This is a picture of the one we cut today from the tree and we'll let it ripen up some more and then eat it! It's small, but for sure, it's going to be good!
