Soooo, I got a traffic ticket about two weeks ago. On a street close to our house. Supposedly I was doing 45 in a 35.
As soon I saw the cop car, I figured I'd probably be pulled over because that's just what happens to me! And sure enough, as soon as I passed him, the lights came on and there you go, I'm pulled over.
I asked the cop what the speed limit was on that stretch of road and he hesitated for a second, looked across the road on the OTHER side of Guilbeau, saw the 30mph sign and told me "30 miles an hour". I was pretty shocked. I had no idea the speed limit was so low on that street. He told me I was doing 45. We found out later that the speed limit on the road where I was pulled over is 35. So, confusion abound.
So, I get my ticket and later we look it over and the ticket says, "Alleged Speed: 35", "Speed Limit: 45". We were surprised and not sure what to make of it. It also said my court date would be July 30th, or before. So I decided to go yesterday to get it taken care of. I tried to go through different scenarios in my mind about what questions the judge would ask me and what my response would be. But then decided the best course of action for this ticket would be to just keep my mouth shut as much as possible and if pressed, point out that the document shows the facts. When I got to the court place, the clerk wouldn't answer any of my questions, telling me to ask the judge about my ticket. So, into the court room I went with lots of other people. When it was my turn to be called up in front of the judge, he looks over my paper work and is silent for a few seconds. Then he asks me if I have the original ticket with me and so I hand it to him. He looks at my ticket and tells me, "This ticket shows you are being charged with going 35 in a 45. That is no offense. I am dismissing this ticket." Wow, that was music to my ears!!! Most people were in front of the judge at least a minute or longer, I was in front of him for maybe 15 seconds. Anyway, I got lucky this time. But I have to admit that ever since I got the ticket, I have been more observant of speed limits, so that in itself is a good thing. I feel like I have been given a warning with no penalty and I am very grateful.
